What Person-Centred Support Really Means

Community participation is one of the most requested NDIS support categories, and for good reason. It directly supports social connection, confidence, and independence, three things that have a measurable impact on quality of life.

But what does community participation actually involve? And how do you make the most of it in your NDIS plan?

What community participation covers

Community participation support helps you access and engage with your local community. That can include attending social groups, visiting local venues, going to the gym, joining classes, attending events, shopping, or simply spending time in places where you feel connected and involved.

It is funded under the NDIS Core Supports budget, specifically under “Assistance with Social, Economic, and Community Participation.” Your support worker accompanies you and provides whatever level of assistance you need to participate safely and confidently.

Why it matters

Social isolation is one of the biggest challenges for people living with a disability. Community participation support directly addresses that by helping you build routines outside the home, develop social connections, and maintain relationships that matter to you.

For many participants, regular community access improves mood, builds confidence, and reinforces the skills needed to live more independently.

What good community participation support looks like

The best community participation support is not just about getting you out of the house. It is about understanding what you enjoy, what your goals are, and how to make each outing meaningful.

A good support worker will plan activities with you, not for you. They will adapt to your pace, encourage you when appropriate, and step back when you do not need help. Over time, the goal is to increase your independence so you need less support, not more.

How SOS Community Support delivers community participation

At SOS Community Support, community participation is one of our two core services. We match you with consistent support workers who learn what you enjoy and help you access it. Whether that is visiting a local cafe in South Sydney, attending a group activity in South Western Sydney, or building the confidence to try something new, we are alongside you.

We work with both NDIS funded and privately funded participants aged 9 and above.
